Introduction

What is Trademap?

Trademap.org is one of the trade data of United Nations. United Nations publishes data gathered from statistic institutions of countries on trademap.org. Import and export data of all countries are published and import capacities of countries are observed according to product and country.

Trademap is a platform that Total world trade volume, total import and export volume of countries, where countries import from and where and how much countries import what product, may be reported.  At the same time, total foreign trade deficit and surplus of countries or trade deficit and surplus based on product may be reported. Trademap may be considered as the biggest data about foreign trade. 

Access to the Tool

Trademap data are acquired from statistic institution of countries and based on COMTRADE which is managed by United Nations Statistic Department (UNSD).

Trademap data storage systematic works based on Harmonized Code system (HS Code). Products is determined by at least 6 digits hs code and 8-10-12 digits of hs code can be entered according to product specification. 

Tax and tariff to be applied for import in importer’s country and different Hs Code, if any, can be determined by trademap tools

Where is Trademap data received?

Foreign trade statistics being used through trademap application are received from several sources. The primary data is COMTRADE managed by United Nation Statistic Department which is the biggest trade statistic data.  

COMTRADE includes statistics of 160 countries almost 90% of all over world trade flow. Almost 220 countries’ data are available in trademap through using “mirror data” as well as receiving statistics of countries. 

Customs Duty

Trademap also allow users to get equivalent customs duty in 180 countries’ customs Veril. Data is received from ITC Market Access Map which is another trade data system of World Trade Center. Those data include information of access to market, mutual trade agreements and applications about country of origin.

How to use Trade Map

Access to Database

Countries under development including Turkey may reach Market Analysis Tools like ITC Trade Map, Market Access Map which are financially supported by ITC Global Trust Fund since 2008.

Membership is necessary on related web page (www.trademap.org) 

Trademap.org must be used for access to trademap application. Membership is required for signing in. Membership is free of charge and must be done by a mail address and password composed of letter and number combination.  

Membership may be done by using <> button which is located in <> section on the right-top of the page. An activation link will be sent by trademap.org into mail address which you should have entered. Your membership will be activated when you click this link through your mail address. 

Main Selection Menu

Main selection menu allows you to reach data in database. Data in trade map may be observed in  3 ways (according to country, product or trade balance between two countries) 

In case of query is done for product then data about related product is analyzed by different level of details. Queries about countries gives information about import and export of country. Mutual trade flow between two countries are given by Trade Balance. 

2.2.1. Select product you are interested in
Click on <> and input your user name and password for signing in that you selected while membership is done. 

Trademap interface will be opened after sign in and HS code, Country information will be input. 

HS code of product  will be given when click “Advanced Search” on the right side of hs code bar. You must click “At tariff line level” after you log in to “Advanced Search” and then input your HS code description and country which you interested in (all countries will be listed in case of select all)

2.2.2. Select Country you are interested in
Country selection is done via bar under hs code bar. Country name must be entered in English. As it is done in the first step, all countries will be listed as you enter letters, country selected through clicking on it. 

2.2.3. Select Data you are interested in
The last step before statistics is to select what type of statistic is selected. Import or Export must selected and then one of Trade Indicators, Yearly Time Series, Quarterly Time Series, Monthly Time Series must be selected. A new page will be opened and statistics according to selection will be published.

Statistic Selection Menu on top of screen shows which data is given and it is the base menu for selection of choices easily. Explanations regarding to data provided by factors on menu and choices  are available below. 

How to create a Table, Graph or a Map

Output selection menu determines output to be used as result of selection done according to statistic selection menu above

“Table”, “Graph”, “Map” on the top of table received allow indicate data as table, graph and map 
Icons under selection bar allow to record tables as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word or Text. 
“Rows per page” menu on the right-top of table allow similar row number on table. 

Product Analysis

Determine HS code of product

Trade Map allows observation of foreign trade data in 3 different way. Observation may be focused on product, country or trade balance between two countries. 

A company looking for potential export markets may have those kind of questions;
which countries import the related product? 
Which countries are competitive in this sector?
Which country exports the related product the most? 
What is world market about product produced in our country?
What is state of affairs of product in recent years? 
What are customs conditions in target markets. 

HS code of product must be known to make market analysis of related product by TradeMap application. In case of company has been already exporting its product then HS code may be received from Customs Consultant Company.  

In case of company has not exported its good before then HS code can be received from TUIK category service provider. 

Leading importers

Exporter company would like to know the biggest importer countries 
HS code is entered into product selection bar on main selection menu and import regime will be selected as country selection must void then table to be opened will list importers of product. 

Countries to be listed according to import value at the last year. 

Leading exporters

Another factor to be observed by exporter company is to get where global competition is emerged. 

Hs code is entered into main selection menu and ‘Export’ option is selected. 

Another method to reach the same screen is to select statistic selection menu over table screen. 

Turkey’s current markets

Exporter of any good would know which countries import the related product. Hs code of product must be entered into main search menu and ‘Turkey’ must be selected as exporter country as soon as signing into the system to actualize this. 

Table to be opened will list importer countries of the related good and import volumes of countries. Countries are listed as descending according to their import values from Turkey.

Graph indicating Turkey’s exporting markets for the related product (“Prospect for market diversification…”) can be reached by Graph click over table. 

Market Analysis

Selection of Target Market

Tools above mentioned advise about structures and state of affairs in different countries and compare country markets. Tools assists companies to determine product according to market structures as selecting target countries in terms of company strategies and choices.

A company must determine where to focus according to target market analysis according to company choices, strategies and its own situation. Stuff to be done by company; are to select according to its own category and to analyze importing capacity of countries determined.
