1 General information

TEC Edmonton is a business accelerator that helps emerging technology companies grow successfully. As a joint venture of the University of Alberta and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, TEC Edmonton operates the Edmonton region’s largest accelerator for early-stage technology companies, and also manages commercialization of University of Alberta technologies. TEC Edmonton delivers services in four areas: Business Development, Funding and Finance, Technology Management, and Entrepreneur Development.  Since 2011, TEC clients have generated $915M in revenue, raised $444M in financing and funding, invested $246M in R&D, grown both revenue and employment by 22 per cent per year and now employ over 2,400 people in the region. In addition, TEC has assisted in the creation of 27 spinoff companies from the University of Alberta in the last six years.

2 Supporting activities

TEC’s programs, services and partnerships are offered through four integrated areas of expertise:

 

Business Development

Business Development helps early-stage company grow, by assisting in areas of business ranging from market research to business planning to product development.

 

Funding and Finance

Funding and finance assist in becoming investment-ready, then help find funding and financing.

 

Technology Management

Technology Management help determine if invention has commercial potential and can be copyright or patent protected. Once protected, TEC can help determine best route to commercialization. Technology management also provide specific services to Researchers at the University of Alberta.

 

Entrepreneur Development

Entrepreneurs often need knowledge and training outside of conventional schooling. Enterpreneur development provide seminars, workshops and advisory sessions with experts to improve business.

TEC Health Accelerator

TEC Edmonton is one of the leading incubators of innovative companies in the health field. Main goal with the Health Accelerator initiative is to assist a minimum of 50 new health-care company clients over the next five years, and to have brokered 12 major financing or partnership deals for those clients. The TEC Health Accelerator is funded by federal, provincial and municipal funding sources and through corporate, finance and other strategic partnerships. This funding is part of a determined effort to commercialize innovative technology and products from Canada’s research institutions and entrepreneurs.

 

TELUS T- Squared Accelerator

 TELUS T- Squared Accelerator was established in 2016 to connect start-ups and industry. It is new incubation space in Edmonton’s Enterprise Square.

3 Programs

TEC EDMONTON divided series into five modules with 6-8 lessons per module. Each lesson is between six and fifteen minutes and the series has a building block structure.

Launch offers an overview of the early stage considerations that a small business needs to be aware of when bringing a product or service to market. This module offers an overview of the early stage that a small business needs to consider when bringing a product or service to market. The module is intended to provide a reference framework for small business owners.

Entry provides an outline of business activities that small businesses need to reflect and address during that exciting time when the business enters the market.

This module is focused on that exciting time when the business enters the market for the first time. The module covers seven topics, including:

• Go-To-Market Plans
• Marketing and Communication Strategy
• Strategic vs. Implementation Focus
• Product Development Plan
• Accounting
• Grant Funding Landscape

Expansion delivers a wide range of topics for small business owners to explore when expanding the business into new markets and / or to new customers.

The module explores topics that many entrepreneurs and start-up companies need to consider more of when they have launched the product and are expanding in the marketplace.
The module covers six topics, including:

• Sales Teams
• Channel Partners and Distribution Networks
• Strategic Partners
• Manufacturing and Supply Chain
• Governance
• Investors

Growth brings small business owners the opportunity to look at a variety of complex activities that are required when a small business is growing.

The module looks at what small business owners need to consider during the growth and maturity of the business.
The module covers eight topics, including:

• Scalable Organizational Processes & Systems
• Talent Development, Management, and Retention
• Growth Market Identification
• Innovation Strategy
• Creating Metrics
• Risk Management
• Investor Relations
• Exit Strategy

Demonstration provides small business owners an overview of how to initiate and plan demonstration projects when testing preliminary product desirability in the marketplace.

The module introduces the concept of commercial demonstration projects through five topic areas:

• Overview of Demonstration Projects
• Planning and Design
• Resources
• Risk & Contingency
• Outcomes
