Introduction to Netiquette

Netiquette

 Netiquette refers to being courteous and polite when communicating with others online. It is short for ‘Internet Etiquette’

It applies to all forms of online communication:

 Emails

 Social Media (private and public)

 Video calls – Zoom, Skype

 

Netiquette rules

 

 

Practical Application of Netiquette

 Language: Avoid strong language, excessive use of capitals and !! Never use expletives

 Think before posting: You are the ambassador of your enterprise – do not post anything online that could harm your reputation.

 Never post/respond to a post when angry.

 Less is more: Your posts need to be clear and concise – if you want people to read your message, keep it short and direct.

 Never reveal confidential information about your enterprise online

    

 

 

Urban Outfitters

 Following Hurricane Sandy in the US, clothing store Urban Outfitters were strongly criticized for the following tweet:

 Although they deleted the tweet and apologized, their share prices dropped considerably.

 They managed to rebuild their reputation but smaller enterprises may not be able to recover

 Why is it important to be ethical and responsible while using technology and online tools?

 When people are online, they sometimes feel invisible – they may do/say things they would never do/say in public…

◆ Be proactive – make sure your social media is always up to date
◆ Stay focused – use your calendar to block out time to keep up to date with your digital activity
◆ Be disciplined – how much productive time are you spending online
◆ Use the correct tools e.g. use Hootsuite to schedule posts to your channels on a regular basis
