Description

""

A reliable and accessible transportation system is essential to maintain our quality of life. Transport pressures the environment significantly in the European Union (EU), causing air pollution, noise, and climate change. Large areas of land are taken up by transportation infrastructure, which also contributes to soil sealing, habitat fragmentation, and urban sprawl. As a result, the transport industry represents a significant barrier to the EU's climate protection objectives. According to the report "Walking and cycling: latest evidence to support policymaking,", presented at the Bonn Dialogue on Environment and Health and hosted by the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health, significant shifts towards walking and cycling can address issues related to current transportation patterns (emissions of air pollutants, greenhouse gases, noise, traffic injuries, limited opportunities for physical activity and use of public space).
